Cindy Crawford Retiring From Modeling: ‘I Can’t Keep Reinventing Myself’

Cindy Crawford doesn’t plan on working as a professional supermodel for much longer.

Crawford, 49, will retire from modeling in the near future, in part because she wants to escape the constant need to prove herself in the industry.

“I’ve done it. I’ve worked with all these incredible photographers. What else do I need to do?” Crawford told Rhapsody magazine. “I can’t keep reinventing myself. I shouldn’t have to keep proving myself. I don’t want to.”

Crawford did suggest that though she won’t see herself as a model anymore, that doesn’t mean that she’ll stop getting in front of the camera altogether.

“I’m sure I’ll have my picture taken for 10 more years, but not as a model anymore,” said Crawford. “And that’s ok.”

Crawford, who will turn 50 later this month, reflected about her age in the interview and wondered at what age anyone is actually fully at peace with it. She also conceded that her changing appearance as she ages is something she can’t help but think about in certain occasions – including while promoting her book Becoming Cindy Crawford, which charts her three decades as a model.

“I see my daughter—you spend your teenage years wanting to be older. When are you just happy where you are?” Crawford asked, “For better or worse, I feel that there is that pressure. I’m out on book tour. I don’t look the same that I did 25 years ago, and I don’t want to disappoint. Maybe that’s the Midwesterner in me. I want them to like me. But when do we just be happy where we are?”

“The big numbers are hard—or mind-boggling—for me. You wake up at 40, or almost 50, and you realize, I’m still me,” Crawford added. “The fact that I am doing work that I love, have a good relationship with my husband, beautiful kids, all of that makes it not totally painless—because there’s still some yearning for what was—but what would I trade for it? What day or what experience of my life would I give up to be younger? Nothing.”
