Jared Fogle, Former Subway Spokesman, Sentenced To 15 Years In Prison
Jared Fogle, who gained national fame as the spokesperson for sandwich chain Subway, has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison at the conclusion of his child pornography and sex crime case.
Jared Fogle Sentenced
Fogle had been hoping to serve just five years behind bars for his crimes, and the prosecution had been seeking a sentence of 12 years and seven months. Judge Tanya Walton Pratt did not think either punishment was sufficient, and sentenced Fogle to 15 years and eight months in prison in court Thursday, reported the Indianapolis Star.
Pratt said that the advisory sentence range “does not sufficiently account for the defendant’s criminal conduct,” adding, “Federal judges do not sentence based on emotion or public sentiment. The level of perversion and lawlessness exhibited by Mr. Fogle is extreme.”
Despite sentencing Fogle to more than had been advised, Pratt suggested that his sentencing could have been higher. While determining his prison stay, she said she took into account the $1.4 million in restitution he paid. Pratt also said she believes that Fogle is sincerely remorseful for his actions.
During his closing statements ahead of sentencing, Fogle admitted to his addictions and expressed his regret at what they had ultimately caused.
“For most of my adult life, I’ve been in the spotlight, trying to be a role model,” Fogle said. “I became dependent on alcohol, pornography and prostitutes. Not a day will go by when I don’t think about what I did to [the victims]. Members of my family are also victims of my acts…. I so regret that I let so many of you down.”
Fogle had been charged with and pled guilty to possessing child pornography and paying for sex with minors.
