Mega Millions Winners: Two Winning Tickets Sold For $636 Million Jackpot
Two lucky winners have won Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot and will split the enormous $636 million prize. The winning numbers: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and a Megaball 7.
Mega Millions Winners: $636 Million Jackpot
The $636 million jackpot is the second-largest jackpot ever in the U.S., and each winner will receive roughly $341.2 million. In addition to the two jackpot winners, 20 participants will receive $1 million for matching all the numbers save the Megaball.
The winners have not yet been identified to the media, but what is known is that one winning ticket was purchased in San Jose, Calif., and the other in Atlanta, Ga. The owners of the shops, Young Soolee (Atlanta) and Thuy Nguyen (San Jose), who sold the winning tickets will also be receiving a prize of about $1 million.
The Odds Of Winning
The enormous jackpot became so large after the Mega Millions lottery rules were changed, including more numbers, thus making the odds of winning much smaller. The odds of winning went from a reported 1 in 176 million to 1 in 259 million in October, and no one has won since, causing the jackpot to compound every cycle. This jackpot originally started at $12 million. Now that winners have been declared, the jackpot will reset to a measly $15 million.
“Winning the Mega Millions is akin to getting struck by lightning at the same time you’re being eaten by a shark,” Todd Northrop, founder of Lotterypost.com, told CNN.
