A sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is underway but Rooney Mara will not be taking part.

ROONEY MARA WILL NOT APPEAR IN DRAGON TATTOO SEQUEL

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is slated to hit theaters Oct. 5, 2018, but who will portray main character Lisbeth Salander is unclear. Mara starred in the role in 2011 but will not be returning for part two. “I’m sad never to do it again, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards,” Mara said.

Reports are saying that both Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are being considered for the role, as director Fede Alvarez works with casting. Johansson apparently vied for the role back six years ago when Mara was chosen for the part. “Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life,” the filmmaker said. “We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth.”

“In all contemporary literature, Lisbeth Salander is completely sui generis – probably one of the greatest female literary characters of all time in my view,” says Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures. “Modern punk defiance personified, she is unforgettable in every incarnation, truly one of the most compelling characters we’ve seen in recent years.”

“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity,” says Alavarez. “Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship.”

The Girl in the Spider’s Web will be the first of the best-selling book series to be first adapted into an English language film.
