Massachusetts police called in a tow truck to carry away a massive, bloodied great white shark that washed up dead on a beach in Cape Cod.

The 12- foot, 1,240-pound shark was found on the shore of Nauset Beach in Eastham.

Local officials say it remains unclear as to how the animal died, but they were able to identify the male shark, named Koala.

Koala was a mature male shark first identified by officials in 2022, noted the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

The Orleans Police Department described the incident as “not one of our typical calls for service.”

The change in tides made it challenging for officials to move the massive creature.

“The difficulty with the tide, [the shark] was just staying in the surf-line just a little bit and then it would recede with the tide,” Tony Pike, the town’s beach safety director said.

Pike added, “It was difficult for the staff to get a line on it, particularly this time of year.”

A necropsy was to be conducted in the days after the shark’s sighting to help determine the cause of death. Following reports posted to social media, many locals crowded the beach to observe the extraction.

Great whites are a frequent sight on Massachusetts beaches. Between 2015 and 2018, there were an estimated 800 great white sharks in the state’s waters, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

In January, a 13-foot Great White beached itself in New South Wales, Australia.
