Floyd Mayweather Apologizes For Oscar De La Hoya Meme Posted To His Instagram Account
Floyd Mayweather’s Instagram account briefly featured a meme that mocked Oscar De La Hoya’s absence from the Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez fight after checking himself into rehab for substance abuse. Mayweather has since apologized, and has placed the blame on those who manage his social media profiles.
After the meme went viral and Mayweather was weathering some backlash, he took to Twitter to write, “I support Oscar De La Hoya,” and link to a larger statement posted to his Instagram.
"It's unfortunate that a stupid picture was posted to my Instagram account earlier today that was not posted by me or authorized by me to post,” Mayweather wrote on Instagram. “As I clearly stated during my fight week and again in the post-fight press conference, I completely support Oscar De La Hoya and his family during this difficult time in his life. I stand by him unconditionally and would never personally disrespect him or anyone else who struggles with addiction.
"I apologize to Oscar and his family for this posting,” Mayweather concluded. “I wish him well and am rooting for him to win his fight too. I also apologize to all of my followers for this ridiculous post. I have no ill-will towards anyone."
The Mayweather vs. Alvarez fight was co-promoted by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions. After his win Saturday night, Mayweather took the opportunity to wish the mentor of his defeated foe well. "I want Oscar to, you know, I want him to come home and get back to what he does best,” Mayweather said. “I'm saying as far as getting behind his young fighters and helping to coach them and keeping them on the right path. And Oscar De La Hoya's a true champion. I commend him and take my hat off to him, also."
De La Hoya checked himself into rehab last week to combat his ongoing stuggle with drug and alcohol abuse. The former champion boxer first admitted his battle with addiction two years ago and revealed that he made an effort to go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings six days a week.
