Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming to America’ Sequel Set For 2020 Release

Eddie Murphy is headed back on screen for the Coming To America sequel.

On Monday, Paramount confirmed the news and announced that the sequel to the 1988 comedy is set to hit theaters on August 7, 2020.

Details on the plot have been kept under wraps, but Murphy is expected to reprise his role as the story’s central character, Prince Akeem as he heads back to America to search for his long-lost son. It is still unknown whether or not James Earl Jones, Shari Headley and John Amos will also return as their beloved characters from the original movie.

Behind the script of the film is Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, who will be executive producing as Craig Brewer directs.

The sequel has been in the works for several years now with Jonathan Levine previously attached to direct. But now Brewer is set to take the lead in directing, while Barris, who has been attached to the sequel since 2017 is expected to rewrite the original Coming to America script by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy will also be producing the film alongside Kevin Misher.

Everyone involved in the film has a lot to live up to as the original Coming to America film, which followed Prince Akeem as he traveled to America to find a wife, was a major hit and grossed nearly $300 million at the worldwide box office.

Lately, Murphy has had a lot to celebrate these days. Including the recent birth of his 10th child, Max Charles Murphy, with his fiancée Paige Butcher and his latest Netflix work with Brewer called Dolemite Is My Name which tells a story about comedian Rudy Ray Moore.
