Constance Wu Calls Out Academy For Nominating Casey Affleck After 2 Sexual Harassment Suits
Casey Affleck has been nominated for the Best Lead Actor Academy Award this year for his work in Manchester by the Sea, and Constance Wu had something to say.
CONSTANCE WU CRITICIZES THE ACADEMY
The Fresh Off the Boat actress took to Twitter to remind the Internet about the two sexual harassment lawsuits Affleck faced in 2010, which he settled for a reported $2 million each. Wu wanted to point out the hypocrisy of the Academy for applauding a man charged with sexual harassment when the award he’s up for “honors a craft whose purpose is examining the dignity of the human experience.”
“Boys! BUY ur way out of trouble by settling out of court!Just do a good acting job, thats all that matters!bc Art isn’t about humanity, right?” Wu wrote in one tweet. “Men who sexually harass women 4 OSCAR! Bc good acting performance matters more than humanity, human integrity!Bc poor kid rly needs the help!” she said in another.
Wu apparently was told not to speak out about Affleck “for career’s sake,” advice to which she did not take kindly. “F my career then,” she said. “I’m a women & human first. That’s what my craft is built on.”
Today, she continued her protest, which was more aimed at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences than at Affleck himself. “I care most about the young boys & girls who will absorb what @TheAcademy ‘s choices will implicitly teach them about rape culture,” she said. “& if u think rape culture is only about actual rape/intercourse,uh it’s not,so do urself a favor & look it up,read about it.Learn something.”
