Biden Says He Would Have Beaten Trump In 2024 Election If He Stayed In Race – But Might Have Died In Office
President Joe Biden said he believed if he had continued as the Democratic nominee in the 2024 election – rather than step aside to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris – he would have beaten Donald Trump.
In the interview, Biden acknowledged that had he been elected, he likely would not make it through his full second term. However, he still maintained he would have defeated Trump, telling USA Today, “It’s presumptuous to say that, but I think yes.”
He said, “When Trump was running again for reelection, I really thought I had the best chance of beating him. But I also wasn’t looking to be president when I was 85 years old, 86 years old…who the hell knows? So far, so good. But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old.”
When asked, Biden asserted that he believed he would have been more successful than Harris was “based on the polling.” When Biden was still the Democratic nominee, polls showed that he lost to Trump by a wide margin. Many Democrats lost faith in Biden throughout the duration of his campaign as he exhibited increasing signs of slowing down. After a disastrous debate against Trump in June, Biden lost even more support.
Most Democrats disagree with Biden’s assessment. Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minnesota) told NBC she believed Trump would have still prevailed in the election had Biden stayed the Democratic nominee, saying, “30 to 40 House seats with him.”
Biden announced his decision to withdraw in July, saying, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.” He later said in a prime-time address, “The best was forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.”
