'American Idol' Recap: Sam Woolf, Malaya Watson, MK Nobilette & More Crack Top 13
American Idol’s first live results show of the season Thursday night revealed the fan-voted top 10 and three wildcards picked by the judges to round out the 13 finalists.
'American Idol' Recap
Earlier in the week, the top 15 girls and top 15 guys waited to learn if they were selected to perform for America’s votes. Only 10 from each group got that chance, and only five girls and five guys would be selected by the fans. On Thursday, those 10 talented singers were announced.
Malaya Watson, Emily Piriz, Jessica Meuse, Majesty Rose and MK Nobilette were the five fan-voted girls. The five fan-voted guys were Ben Briley, Alex Preston, Dexter Roberts, Sam Woolf and Caleb Johnson.
Out of the remaining 10 singers remaining on the couch, Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban selected five to sing for a chance to get one of the three wildcard spots.
5 Sing For Wildcard Spots
First up was the bluesy C.J. Harris, who struggled with the band, which Connick thought may have been to blame for the mediocre performance. Then came Jena Irene. Irene seemed like a completely different artist on Thursday, taking a risk by playing her original song “Unbreakable Me” and wowing the audience and judges in the process.
Spencer Lloyd was next, and he also chose an original song. The tween girl favorite’s performance was lacking too much for even Lopez to find something positive to say. Then came Bria Anai singing James Brown’s “This is a Man’s World” and seemed to scream her way through most of it.
The last Idol hopeful selected to compete for a wildcard spot was Kristen O’Connor. O’Connor picked “Unconditionally” by Katy Perry. Like Harris, it seemed like their was a disconnect between her singing and the band behind her.
In the end, the judges selected Jena Irene, Kristen O’Connor and C.J. Harris to move on with the other 10 singers.
