On the May 5 airing of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Channing Tatum discussed his struggle with quarantine weight gain at the start of the pandemic. The 41-year-old actor told Fallon that he got “pretty fat” when the host asked him about it. “I would probably say, college 10, a nice 10 pounds. And then I took it off,” he clarified.

“For the first like, I’d say week or two weeks, I definitely was just drinking beers and riding dirt bikes and I was like,’I can’t do this for like, two months,’ Like, ‘This is bad,” he said. Tatum told Fallon that he knew he had to get back on track.

“And then me and my buddy, we just went really, really hard. We started training every day,” he added. “And it was great. I mean, I came out a completely new person.”

Tatum didn’t share any pictures of himself online from the start of the pandemic, in March 2020, to August. The first post he made on Instagram was to promote his children’s book, The One and Only Sparkella, which was inspired by his daughter, seven-year-old Everly.

In the photo, the muscular actor wears a paint-splattered apron and fairy wings. He’s reading the new book to his daughter. The caption reads, “Guys, I don’t know about you but things got a little weird for me in quarantine. I ended up accidentally locking myself in my 7 year old daughter’s room. And I ended up finding my inner child. So this is what I created for my little girl. From what is, I guess, the little girl in me. Thanks for reading.”

Less than a month later, Tatum posted a shirtless picture on Instagram, displaying his chiseled physique.

He captioned it, “It’s been a long road back. Injuries, life sh-t, and just insanity in general. Ha daddy is finally back boooi!! Gonna be a fun next 10 year run. To all those that have been there for me and held me down through it all. I love you. I’m gonna make ya proud. Let’s goo. Also keep the purell bottle. Keep it clean out there folks. Hahaha.”
