On Thursday, Caitlyn Jenner blasted President Donald Trump and his administration’s efforts to roll back rights for transgender people.

Jenner made her criticisms in a Washington Post op-ed about the administration’s announcement this week that it wishes to define gender based on a person’s genitalia at birth, a move that could potentially eliminate transgender Americans’ legal recognition.

The 68-year-old reality television star and former Olympic decathlete is a renown conservative who reportedly voted for Trump in the 2016 election. Jenner said she believed Trump would champion LGBTQ rights, something he promised to do when speaking at the Republican National Convention in July 2016.

However, Jenner now admits she was wrong about Trump.

“Sadly, I was wrong,” Jenner wrote. “The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this president.”

Jenner also directly sent Trump a tweet on Monday that repeatedly showed the phrase “Trans people won’t be erased” and received responses from several people, including CNN contributor Ana Navarro.

“GIRL, A BUNCH OF PEOPLE TRIED TO TELL YOU,” Navarro wrote several times, copying the style of Jenner’s tweet, before finishing with “GIRL… oh, never mind.”

Jenner — who came out as a woman in 2015 — explained in her op-ed that she traveled to Washington several times over the last few years in order to speak with lawmakers about issues affecting the transgender community, and that although she received some backlash from the community for interacting with Republican politicians and the Trump administration, she “remained hopeful for positive change.”

“The leader of our nation has shown no regard for an already marginalized and struggling community,” Jenner wrote. “He has ignored our humanity. He has insulted our dignity. He has made trans people into political pawns as he whips up animus against us in an attempt to energize the most right-wing segment of his party, claiming his anti-transgender policies are meant to “protect the country.” This is politics at its worst. It is unacceptable, it is upsetting, and it has deeply, personally hurt me.”

She continued: “Believing that I could work with Trump and his administration to support our community was a mistake.”

Jenner also went on to specifically name some of the issues that “disproportionately affect” the LGBTQ community: “homelessness, job discrimination, violence, access to health care, prejudice in housing, depression, suicide.”

Trump insisted on Monday, after an internal memo was leaked that revealed his administration’s plans regarding transgender Americans, that he is “protecting everybody.”

“We have a lot of different concepts right now,” he said. “They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now. You know that as well as I do, and we’re looking at it very seriously.”

Several protests have taken place around the country every since the memo was released.
