Dismal Year For Box Office Ends With 'Little Fockers' On Top

Hollywood ended 2010 with a box office whimper, with attendance dropping 27 percent compared to the last weekend of 2009.

Little Fockers, starring Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro, took the number one spot, despite grossing only $26.3 million. In second place, Joel and Ethan Coen's western True Grit took in $24.5 million to become the Coen brothers' biggest hit, topping Academy Award Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men.

Tron: Legacy continued its impressive run at the box office, finishing in third with a haul of $18.3 million. The niche fantasy flick has already surpassed the original Tron's box office numbers, and is nearing the overall gross of M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, a similar fantasy movie that opened this summer.

This was the second-worst year at the box office since 1996: Only 1.35 billion people went through the turnstiles in 2010, just above 1996's 1.33 billion. But back then, movie tickets cost an average of $4.42 a ticket; that average is now $7.85. Attendance dropped more than 5 percent from last year. —ISHITA SINGH
