Jared Remy, Son Of Former Red Sox Jerry Remy, Pleads Not Guilty To Killing Girlfriend Jennifer Martel
Jared Remy stands accused of stabbing his girlfriend Jennifer Martel to death one day after he was released from custody for allegedly assaulting her. Remy, the son of former Red Sox player and current Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, pled not guilty to the murder charge on Friday.
On Thursday, cops responded to numerous 911 calls that directed them to an apartment complex in Waltham, Mass. Arriving around 10 p.m., they found Martel’s body, which had been stabbed numerous times, on the back patio, according to Middlesex District Attorney Maria Ryan. Remy, who was covered in blood, was arrested at the scene of the crime, reported The Boston Globe.
During Remy’s arraignment, prosecutors detailed what they believe was the chain of events that led to Martel’s death. They allege that Remy began his assault against his girlfriend in the kitchen, continuing through the apartment’s living room and stairway. Eventually, he pinned her down on the back patio, where prosecutors claim he stabbed her multiple times.
Corroborating the prosecution's accounts were witnesses who claim to have seen the brutal attack go down. Middlesex Assistant DA Lisa McGovern told the judge on Friday that when the witnesses went to put an end to the attack, Remy threatened to turn his knife on them as well. Martel and Remy’s 4-year-old child was found in the house uninjured.
Just one day before Martel’s slaying, Remy was released from custody after being charged with assault-and-battery on her. Over the course of his life, Remy has had multiple run-ins with the law. Since 1998, he has accumulated 15 criminal charges, according to Waltham court records
Jerry Remy is going on hiatus from his broadcasting position at NESN in light of his son’s legal troubles. NESN released a statement offering condolences for Martell’s family, while backing their longtime employee. “All of us at NESN and the Red Sox, along with Jerry Remy, are filled with grief for everyone involved,” the statement read. “And we extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Jennifer Martell.”
