Olivia Jade Giannulli will compete on the hit TV show Dancing With the Stars (DWTS). After her central role in the college admission scandal known as Varsity Blues, the YouTuber is now hoping to turn over a new leaf with her appearance. Giannulli says she wants to grow as a person in this new role and move past her scandal from two and a half years ago.

In April 2019, Giannulli’s parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli, were found guilty of using a $500,000 bribe to admit their daughters (Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose Giannulli) as USC sports recruits. In reality, neither girl had played a sport. Their case was a catalyst in revealing connected admission bribery cases including Felicity Huffman.

U.S. tuition costs have continued to rise each year, inflating beyond the means of most Americans. Despite the rise in education costs, the minimum wage has remained mostly the same. At the same time, a college degree has become a prerequisite for most professional careers, leaving many students faced with the burden of student debt. The Giannulli daughters used their parents’ money to edge out students who played fairly.

Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli were sentenced to two and five months of jail, respectively, and paid a combined $400,000 in fees. Although a hefty amount, the parents previously paid $100,00 as part of the bribe, alongside the USC tuition fees. Many Twitter users believed that the Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli got off easy since they had a safety net of money to fall back onto.

Olivia Jade herself has been accused of white privilege in this new DWTS casting.
