It’s a sad fact of life that there are two kinds of TV shows: ones that are so bad they’re not even worth it for the laughs and so good that it goes right over the audience’s heads. Supernatural is one of the latter, the best show you’re not watching.

Once the WB-now-CW’s little engine that could, Supernatural has been generating a lot of buzz since the premiere of its fourth season, which surprised even the nosiest of fans with its introduction of angels to the storyline. And not just any angels – douchebag angels who weren’t always on God’s side. Now, halfway through their fifth season, Supernatural is gearing up for its one hundredth episode and that in and of itself is cause enough to turn your TV to the CW on Thursday night at nine, even if it’s the first time you’ve ever done it.

There are tons of reasons to be watching Supernatural. It’s got an intricate plot in which everything and everyone can return to become a key point in another episode. It’s got an intense bond between the brothers – and the main actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. It’s also got fans just, er, loyal enough to call security on Jensen’s now-fiancée Danneel Harris at a Supernatural convention, behavior usually more common in the Twilight fandom.

Misha Collins, the most recent and most welcome addition to the main cast, noted the fanatical devotion Supernatural from his very first convention. He was excited to attend one, but by his second he’d already learned the simple truth: we are crazy dedicated to the show. Emphasis on the word crazy.

Then again, when our loyalty is repaid in spades with things like an episode in which Sam and Dean discover a book series called Supernatural and the small, but devoted fan-following for them (hint, hint) and an episode in which Sam and Dean go to a Supernatural convention and save the day with help from two guys cosplaying as them – both of which fit neatly into the plot – it’s not hard to understand why we love it so much.
