‘Revival’ Album Review By Selena Gomez: Memorable Songs Shine Through

Young pop star Selena Gomez has always been in the spotlight whether it would be with her time being a Disney girl, her complicated relationship with Justin Bieber, or her role in the 2013 film Spring Breakers. But when it comes to music, it is where she has prospered herself into stardom. First, she formed the band Selena Gomez & The Scene and released three albums with the band as well as releasing her first solo album Stars Dance before finishing off a record deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records. After this, it seemed Gomez needed to venture off to a new place if she wanted to keep her integrity as a singer and be as transparent with who she is as a person.

After signing with Interscope Records, Gomez has released her second solo studio album in Revival and she takes the soothing route of expressing her feelings in a well-mannered and confident voice. “It’s my time to butterfly” are the first words she utters on the title track, knowing that she can’t stay on the ground forever like her fellow pop stars but has to start her own musical revolution in thinking outside the box with not just one formulated beat but a plethora of them. This is shown in the catchy, beat-infused tracks “Kill Em With Kindness” and “Me & The Rhythm.” Gomez also shows her R&B influences in “Hands To Myself” and “Sober” in knowing that she can relay her voice to different outcomes knowing there is a conjunction in terms of delivery. The hit singles “Same Old Love” and “Good For You” (feat. A$AP Rocky) summarize the whole album in that the two singles are on two sides of the musical spectrum yet both have substantial value in lasting to the average human ear. The piano ballad “Camouflage” acts like the last ingredient of a cake Gomez is baking: her feelings towards any person can be a sweet conclusion but also can lead to other things. On a side note, her Latin influences shine in the tracks “Survivors” and “Body Heat,” knowing that she is ready to shake off all the feelings and just let go on the dance floor and live for the moment.

Again, Selena Gomez is not one to shine in the overall spotlight, but she sure shines through her music in knowing not to be too flashy but to have a constant flow of memorable numbers and she nails it on Revival. Take this album and put it with the rest of her discography and you see a major step that is not only shaping her career, but being a life-fulfilling achievement knowing that a new journey is about to begin.
