VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: D’Kia Anderson Shares Her Favorite Part Of Working With Tyler Perry On ‘Beauty In Black’
In a sit-down conversation with uInterview, actress D’Kia Anderson shared her experience working with Beauty in Black’s director Tyler Perry.
Beauty in Black, a new Netflix 2024 drama, follows two young women with exceedingly different lives that continue to overlap; a young stripper fights for survival but remains trapped in the industry, while the mother in a wealthy family runs a prospering trafficking scheme.
Anderson gave some background on her role in the series to uInterview founder Erik Meers: “My character kind of just sets s— off. yeah. That’s it, without telling everything, that’s kind of what Leslie does.”
Asked if she enjoyed undertaking the complex, explosive character, Anderson laughed. ”I think I’m very sweet, very friendly…but when I get to dig deep and be explosive, and be kind of mean – I don’t know – it kind of excites me; so yes!”
Anderson thought back on her experience working with acclaimed actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry.
“Working with Tyler Perry was like a master class. A lot of things on set move quickly, so, as I’ve kind of taught myself, I felt like that moment for me was when preparation met opportunity. Because I was ready and here’s the opportunity, and I was ready to deliver, and like, just be on top of my skillset to work alongside Tyler Perry and Netflix.”
Remembering specific meaningful interactions with Perry, Anderson shared, “After my scenes, because Mr. Perry would direct all the scenes, something that he told me after each one of my scenes was – he looked at me right in my eyes and said, ‘Very good job, really good job.'”
She explained, “These moments that we actors live for – just a little bit of validation, that we’re taught to not seek, but when you do the work and you just kind of get it and you’re not expecting it, it feels great.”
Asked about her character’s role in the show, Anderson responded, “In part one, my character Leslie is in two episodes, and in part two she has a few more episodes – so fingers crossed that come season two, we’ll kind of like, unfold Leslie’s character more…I feel like there’s so much more to her that people need to know and people are curious to know – like, ‘Why would you treat your daughter like that?’ ‘What’s happening internally?’ ‘What trauma have you experienced?’ – what’s going on?
