‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Drops First Trailer, Fans Worried About Spoilers

Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped it’s first full trailer last night at halftime during Monday Night Football.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI TRAILER

Director Rian Johnson warned fans that if they wanted to come into the film with a clean slate, that they should not watch the trailer. “I will say this: It’s a hell of a trailer,” he told Yahoo News, and he wasn’t wrong. At first fans were worried that the trailer might spoil parts of the movies based on the following tweet by Johnson: “I a legitimately torn. If you want to come in clean, absolutely avoid it.”

Later, he clarified that he just meant if a fan wanted to be surprised by the film, which comes out Dec. 15, s/he should avoid it. “FWIW: I love that there are folks who want to come into a movie clean, I think that’s awesome. Me, I’m a weak man. I watch ALL THE TRAILERS,” he tweeted. Later he added, “FORGET EVERYTHING I SAID AND WATCH IT WATCH IT WATCH IT.”

The trailer begins with a voice over by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) saying, “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.” It’s unclear who he’s talking to – Kylo Ren? Rey?

We see AT-ATs, stormtroopers, and tie fighters battling on Crait. Both Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) are seen holding light sabers. It appears that the two might have parallel story lines in Episode 8. We see Rey growing more powerful as she trains with Luke Skywalker. “Something inside me has always been there. And then I was awake and I need help,” Rey says. Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, says, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now,” but again, it’s unclear if he means Rey or Kylo Ren.

The trailer goes through many battle sequences. Oscar Isaac and John Boyega make appearances to show they will be part of the fight. A few parts may be tricks thrown together to throw fans off. Kylo Ren is made to look like he’s speeding toward a ship carrying his mother Princess Leia, which is the late Carrie Fisher in her last role, and later he holds out his hand to Rey. The way the scenes are cut, however, it could be a trick of the editors, or a real scene from the film.

“I need someone to show me my place in all this,” is what Rey says, before the camera turns to Kylo Ren, who holds out his hand. And the trailer ends with that scene.

One thing worth mentioning is that the color red is highlighted throughout the trailer, and is prominent in the titles and posters as well. The color hasn’t been featured in previous Star Wars films, which gives The Last Jedi it’s own unique image. It remains to be seen if the color represents more than just an aesthetic look.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15. Tickets are already available through Fandango.
