Snoop Dogg, known for his laid back rapping style and his affinity for marijuana, will be given the “I Am Hip Hop” award at the annual BET Hip-Hop awards this year.

SNOOP DOGG TO RECEIVE “I AM HIP HOP” AWARD AT BET AWARDS

BET announced Tuesday that Snoop would receive the coveted honor, earned in the past by LL Cool J, Russell Simmons and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Snoop Dogg rose to fame after his 1993 debut album Doggystyle hit the number one spot on Billboard’s hop-hop and Top 200 charts. Snoop went on to create 13 additional studio albums and has collaborated with countless artists in the industry. Among his most popular tracks are “Gin & Juice,” “What’s My Name,” “Nuthin’ But A G Thang,” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” His most recent album, Coolaid, released last July, was met with mostly positive reviews, and gave listeners a modern throwback to classic hip-hop roots.

Snoop is also a producer on the new MTV comedy show Mary & Jane, about two twenty-somethings trying to make it in California by selling weed. He is also featured in VH1 show Martha & Snoop Dogg’s Dinner Party with Martha Stewart.

The BET Hip Hop awards will be hosted by DJ Khaled, and will air Oct. 4 on BET.
