Sleepy Hollow’s “The Midnight Rule” began with Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod (Tom Mison) working on making Corbin’s abandoned cabin more habitable and harder for intruders (read: the Headless Horseman) to break in, as Ichabod plans to make it his temporary home.

Ichabod eventually has to make his way to a meeting with his fellow Masons to share information about the Headless Horseman. Abbie likewise has a meeting – with her ex-boyfriend and ongoing coworker Luke (Nicholas Gonzalez). He wants to see if they can be friends, so they go to grab some coffee. Following the get together, Luke gets cornered in an alley by the formerly dead Moloch aid Andy Brooks (John Cho). Brooks warns Luke that Abbie could be in danger, but that he can protect her.

When Abbie leaves the meeting, she’s greeted by a voicemail from Ichabod, who’s gradually learning the ropes of modern technology – and mores. In the message, he tells Abbie that he believes that she should come to the Mason mansion for the meeting because he sees no sense in their rule of excluding women. Before she can get there and hear what they know, Headless, who is searching for his head, gets there first.

Back at the station, Capt. Irving (Orlando Jones) goes to the lab to get his hands on the head. Headless, however, walks in and sprays bullets across the office, hitting and killing the tech who had been observing the skull. Irving steps in, evading Headless’ blows, and managing to snag the virtually indestructible head and escape in his car.

While Irving is taking care of the head, Ichabod and Abbie discuss Paul Revere’s legendary ride. Abbie knows it from history books, but Ichabod, of course, happened to witness it. At the time, he had been guarding a safe house of the Revolution. Standing outside, he saw Revere get a manuscript that he brought with him. The formerly Headed Horseman had followed Revere and his men and managed to take down three of them – but failing to get Revere or his mystical parcel.

Under the belief that the manuscript holds information that’s vital to the Horseman, Ichabod and Abbie successfully figure out what it was and pull it up online. After having some trouble with the computer, Ichabod deduces that the letter was scribed in code – and that the “Cicero” key was engraved on the Horseman’s teeth in silver.

The undead Brooks, whose motives in helping Abbie and Ichabod are still difficult to place, gives them the message that: “You can’t kill Death, but you can trap him.” Abbie and Irving tell Brooks to lure the Horseman to a location just after dusk, while they, with the help of Ichabod, lay down a trap. While waiting for the Horseman to arrive, Ichabod and Abbie discuss their love lives, which ends with Ichabod saying that their sacrifices could mean that “all [they] really get is one another.”

Eventually, Headless does show up according to plan. They manage to entice the entity using a number of decoy heads and lure him into a chamber within the tunnels. Once he’s in there, they flick on massive UV lights that serve to immobilize him. Abbie leaps into action, knocking his weapon out of his hands, as Ichabod constrains him.
