Scarlett Johansson Settles Lawsuit Against Disney’s Over Streaming ‘Black Widow’

Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled their legal dispute over Black Widow.

The announcement was made public on Thursday. Representatives of the actress and the studio released separate statements.

“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” Johansson said in her statement. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”

Chair of Disney Studios Alan Bergman said in his own statement that he was “very pleased” to be able to come to a mutual agreement with the Marvel Studios star.

”We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror,” he said.

Johansson filed a lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company in July. The actress alleged they breached her contract by releasing Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+ at the same time.

She argued that her compensation was based largely on box office receipts. She also claimed she had a contractual promise that the release of the film would be a “theatrical release.” The suit continued to allege Disney chose to further promote its streaming service Disney+ by allowing subscribers to view the film at home, negatively affecting her compensation.

Disney responded to the lawsuit and denied Johansson’s allegations. The company said her complaint had “no merit whatsoever” in a released statement blasting the suit.

They claimed it showed “callous disregard for the horrific prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Disney also said she already received a payout of $20 million for her role.

Johansson’s next film with Disney Tower of Terror doesn’t seem to have been affected by the lawsuit and is continuing to move forward. It is based on the popular theme-park attraction.
