Former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin made a surprise appearance on the latest episode of Fox’s singing competition show, We Are Family.

Hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, the show has non-famous relatives of celebrities showcase their singing talent and later join their secret famous family member for a duet on stage. The studio audience competes to guess the celebrity and win up to $150,000.

Palin, known for her previous appearance on The Masked Singer as the Bear, emerged in a sparkly silver dress to perform a duet of Garth Brooks‘ country classic Friends in Low Places with her non-famous cousin, JD. The performance marked Palin’s return to reality singing competitions, after her memorable rendition of Sir Mix-A-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back” on The Masked Singer.

While many viewers expressed their disappointment with Palin’s participation on social media, others were intrigued by her presence on the show. The reveal of Palin as the secret celebrity came after the appearances of NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and NBA legend Kenny Smith.

In the show, Anderson asked JD about his experience when Palin ran as the Republican VP nominee with John McCain in 2008. JD replied that it was a mind-boggling journey for their entire family, and they were proud of her.

Palin had previously described her time on The Masked Singer as “freeing” and an opportunity to do something unexpected in the public eye. She appreciated the anonymity the mask provided, as it allowed her to express herself without concern for external judgments.

“It was all about the mask…I knew it would be so refreshing and so freeing and well, in a real respectful way, kind of a walking middle finger to the haters out there in the world where I could do whatever I wanted to do and not care what anybody said because they wouldn’t know until after the fact. So it all worked out,” she told host Nick Cannon on the aftershow at the time.

In 2019, Palin’s husband, Todd Palin, filed for divorce after 30 years of marriage.

Last September, Palin was defeated in a special election to fill an open House seat by a Democrat.

We Are Family airs on Fox every Wednesday.
