Kim Cattrall said earlier this month that she would return for a scene in And Just Like That…, a spin-off series of Sex and the City whose second season premiered on Thursday on Max.

Sarah Jessica Parker hinted that the season two finale would feature a “sentimental” phone call between her character Carrie Bradshaw and Cattrall’s Samantha Jones.

Parker considered Samantha’s appearance a “very opportune moment in a very specific story, in a sort of consequential event in Carrie’s life.”

In season one, Cattrall’s character was included in the story through text messages with Carrie. This marks the first time that Cattrall will physically appear on the show.

Samantha’s return comes 25 years after Sex and the City‘s premiere on HBO. Since then, there has been a feeling of uneasiness between Parker and Cattrall, who previously talked about her indifference toward new stories in the Sex and the City universe. She told Variety last year that the series was “basically the third movie. That’s how creative it was.” Cattrall added that she was never asked to be in the spin-off series.

Cattrall also publically vented her personal animosity toward Parker, making the reunion even more surprising.

Kristin Davis, the executive producer of the show alongside stars Parker and Cynthia Nixon as well as showrunner Michael Patrick King, said, “The fans miss Samantha. The fans love Samantha. Samantha’s a fantastic character. We get it.” She continued, mentioning that the reunion honored the plot. In the show, Samantha moved to London after a falling out with Carrie, but following the death of Carrie’s husband John “Mr. Big” Preston (Chris Noth), the pair began texting each other.

Cattrall hasn’t said much about her return to And Just Like That… outside of writing “Happy Pride” on Instagram when the news broke out just before the start of Pride Month in June.
