Who Is Ruby Rose, Breakout Star Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’s Third Season?

Ruby Rose plays new Litchfield inmate Stella on Netflix’s hit series Orange is the New Black, which has shot the sometime-model to stardom.

Who Is Ruby Rose?

Rose, who hails from Australia, got her first break in Girlfriend magazine’s model search. From there, she launched a career as a media personality and TV host. Rose, 29, has guest-judged on Australia’s Next Top Model, Ultimate School Musical and hosted the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Rose went on to launch an acting career in 2013, appearing in TV show Mr & Mrs Murder and movie Around the Block with Christina Ricci. Playing Stella on Orange is the New Black, however, is her biggest role to date. Her character arrives at the women’s prison and shakes up the dynamic of the show’s central couple, Piper Chapman and Alex Vause, played by Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon, respectively.

“Stella is sort of an androgynous, cool, charismatic, and charming girl who I think also is pretty gender-fluid,” Rose told Entertainment Weekly. “She definitely causes some waves.”

In her personal life, Rose, who came out as a lesbian at age 12 and identifies as gender fluid, has had a string of public romances. In the past, she’s dated models Catherine McNeil, Lola Van Vorst and Lyndsey Anne McMillan. She announced her engagement to Phoebe Dahl, Roald Dahl’s granddaughter, back in March.

“Gender fluidity is not really feeling like you’re at one end of the spectrum or the other. For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender. I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one,” Rose told Elle. “So, I’m somewhere in the middle, which – in my perfect imagination – is like having the best of both sexes. I have a lot of characteristics that would normally be present in a guy and then less that would be present in a woman. But then sometimes I’ll put on a skirt – like today.”

Last year, Rose created and starred in a short film titled Break Free. In the video, which has more than 4 million views on YouTube, she transforms her look from a very feminine aesthetic to a more butch aesthetic.

In addition to her acting, modeling and hosting work, Rose has ties to child sponsorship charity World Vision and is launching a clothing brand called Scallywags with her fiancée.
