‘Roseanne’ Revival Renewed For Another Season By ABC

The Roseanne revival has been picked up for another season, ABC confirmed on Friday.

“We’re thrilled that America has welcomed the Conner family back into their homes. The show is a fresh and relevant today as it was when it left the air 21 years ago,” ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what the Roseanne team has in store for next year.”

The popularity of the show’s revival spurred record-breaking numbers. The two-part premiere had 18.2 million total viewers, making it the most-watched program since 2008.

The show also garnered support from President Donald Trump. He made a personal phone call to Roseanne Barr congratulating her on the premiere and boasted about the show’s ratings during an infrastructure speech. “Look at Roseanne … look at her ratings,” the president said. “They were unbelievable. Over 18 million people. And the show was about us,” Trump said.

In an interview with the New York Times, Dungey credited the ratings’ success to the show’s portrayal of a blue-collar family. The revival’s greatest numbers came from Middle America with Tulsa, Oklahoma, being its biggest market. “We had not been thinking nearly enough about economic diversity and some of the other cultural divisions within our own country,” Dungey said. “That’s been something we’ve been really looking at with eyes open since that time.”
