Puppy Bowl XIV took place Sunday on Animal Planet. What, you may ask, is the Puppy Bowl?

Puppy Bowl is an event where puppies play together in a playpen – the way for one of the puppy teams to score is by getting a toy into the end zone. The teams this year were team Ruff and team Fluff. Team Ruff wears green bandanas while team Fluff wears yellow.

The athleticism of these pups is truly re”bark”able… Puppy Bowl XIV is on now! . . . . . #puppybowlfans #puppybowl #puppiesofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #animalplanet

Over 90 dogs participated in the event as a way to promote adoption. All the “players” are adoptable and there’s a wide variety of them. There are even special needs puppies – Buttons, a deaf and blind cocker spaniel, and Sophie, a three-legged golden doodle, participated this year.

“On set, you’re the gatekeeper,” referee Dan Schachner told For the Win. “You’re maintaining order among the chaos. There are 12 dogs around you, you’re trying to find out they’re being safe, you’re the first line of defense. The it’s about getting them inspired to run a ball into the end zone. They can run or kick a toy into any end zone, the rules are pretty loose.”

There were performances for this event just like the Super Bowl. A chicken named Jokgu performed a keyboard rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

Team Fluff was the winner of Puppy Bowl XIV for the second year in a row.
