Pete Davidson Reveals He’s Considering Leaving ‘Saturday Night Live,’ Doesn’t Like Being Show Punchline
“It’s a hard thing to do cause you don’t want to ever pull the trigger too early. But everybody’s always been like, ‘You’ll know when you know and it’ll be all right,” Davidson explained to Charlamange on a recent interview on The Breakfast Club,.
“Do you know?” he then asked Davidson.
“Yeah,” Davidson replied with a smile.
Davidson added that he has a “weird feeling” at SNL. He explained that he often found himself the punchline of jokes, whether or not he was in on them. “They think I’m a f— king dumb. I’m literally painted out to be this big dumb idiot. I have a weird feeling in that building where I don’t know whose team they’re playing for, really — if I’m the joke or I’m in on the joke,” he said.
Davidson noted that he does not blame the cast or writers for their insensitivity. Rather, he explains that it is Saturday Night Live‘s competitive “cutthroat” atmosphere that leads to cruel jokes. He added that he does not want to admit to it bothering him because he does not want to be seen as a “hypocrite.”
“Everyone’s trying to get their s— on. Everyone wants to be the next thing. Like, you’re not going to get coddled over there. You know, they don’t give a f— at the end of the day,” said Davidson.
His disclosure did not apply to all members of the Saturday Night Live cast. Davidson stated that he is grateful for his relationship with SNL‘s creator, Lorne Michaels. He also credited Michaels as a major reason for him staying for at least one more season. “Lorne’s the s—, and he’s the best and has treated me with nothing but love. He’s like a father figure to me,” he said.
He added that he does not consider himself to be a crucial cast member for the show and that he is ready to move on after his six seasons. “I think everybody outgrows it and I think for what I could do on the show—which is just barely anything and it’s just Weekend Update and I feel like I’ve done, like, 30 of those and I just feel like, yeah, I’ve done as much as I can over there but happy to be there as long as Lorne likes me.”
