Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez are set to star in a remake of the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard, which will tell a similar tale, but with the roles reversed.

The original film featured Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and Edward Herrmann, and was directed by Garry Marshall. Hawn played a stuck-up heiress who got amnesia after falling off her yacht, while Russell portrayed the carpenter who falls in love with her.

The 2017 remake will be co-directed by Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother) and Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers).

‘Overboard Remake’

This rendition will re-imagine the original film with a reversal of the leading roles. It’ll tell the tale of a spoiled playboy, portrayed by Derbez, who falls overboard off his yacht. He’ll then be persuaded by Faris’ single mother that he’s her husband.

“The original Overboard was beloved and the only way to bring it back is to reinvent the story in a whole new way,” said MGM Motion Picture Group President Jonathan Glickman. “Anna and Eugenio are two of the most charismatic forces in comedy whose take on the material will modernize the story for a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

Faris currently stars alongside Allison Janney in CBS’s sitcom Mom, which is now in its fourth season. She also launched her comedy advice podcast Anna Faris Is Unqualified in 2015, and will publish her comedic memoir Unqualified this fall.
