Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested in Tennessee for a DUI and gun possession after he got in a car accident with another driver.

Police responded to a call for a minor collision in Downton Franklin on Thursday at around 5 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, the other driver informed the police that the man [Cutler] with a White Ram truck had rear-ended him and offered him $2,000 not to report the crash before he unsuccessfully attempted to flee the scene.

In conversation with Cutler, police noted they smelled alcohol on his breath, and was slurring speech, losing balance, and had bloodshot eyes. Cutler initially denied he had ingested any alcohol, but after a cop accused him of lying, he admitted he had “a little,” though still refused to take a sobriety test.

Two guns, including a loaded pistol, were found in Cutler’s car.

When talked into custody, Cutler was charged with a DUI, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision, implied consent and possession of a handgun while under the influence. A blood search warrant was also obtained at a nearby medical center.

Cutler was sent to Williamson County Jail and given a $5,000 bond. He was released that evening, with the condition that he not drive cars without an ignition interlock device or while under the influence.

An ignition interlock device won’t allow a car to start until it monitors the driver’s breath alcohol content.

The 11th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Cutler joined the Denver Broncos and played three seasons in Denver, which took him to the Pro Bowl in 2008. He went on to spend the majority of his career playing for the Chicago Bears until he retired in 2017.

In 2020, Cutler’s ex, Kristen Cavallari, accused him of “inappropriate marital conduct.”
