Melania Trump made clear on Wednesday she will not tolerate anyone using her son Barron Trump as the butt of any joke.

In an angry tweet, the first lady blasted Stanford Law professor Pamela Karlan — one of the witnesses in House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump — for using Barron to make an analogy about Trump’s abuse of power.

“A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics,” Melania Trump wrote on Twitter. “Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.”

In Wednesday’s testimony, Karlan used the 13-year-old first son — who has special needs — to make a point about the distinction between a president and a monarch.

“The Constitution says there can be no titles of nobility, so while the President can name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron,” said Karlan, who supports Trump’s impeachment.

The legal scholar ultimately issued an apology for her comment.

“I want to apologize for what I said earlier about the President’s son, it was wrong of me to do that,” said Karlan later in Wednesday’s hearing. “I wish the President would apologize, obviously, for the things he’s done that’s wrong, but I do regret having said that.”

The first lady wasn’t the only person to rush to Barron’s defense, however. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), one of Trump’s closest allies in the House of Representatives, also rebuked Karlan during Wednesday’s hearing for using the president’s son to make an argument.

“Let me also suggest that when you invoke the President’s son’s name here, when you try to make a little joke out of referencing Barron Trump, that does not lend credibility to your argument. It makes you look mean,” Gaetz told the Stanford professor. “It makes you look like you’re attacking someone’s family, the minor child of the president of the United States.”

Vice President Mike Pence also condemned Karlan’s remark at an event in the Netherlands.

“The impeachment hearings today reached a new low,” said Pence. “I just heard at the hearing today, one of the Democrats’ witnesses actually used the President and first lady’s 13-year-old son to justify their partisan impeachment. Democrats should be ashamed. Enough is enough.”
