Lori Vallow Daybell, an Idaho woman found guilty of murdering her two kids and conspiring to murder her husband’s first wife, has appealed her conviction, according to court documents.

The notice of appeal was filed on August 31 by her attorney. The attorney cites Daybell’s multiple issues with her conviction. The appeal raised concerns about her mental competency, an opening statement made by prosecutors to the jury and her right to a speedy trial.

Daybell was found guilty of murdering her two children, Joshua Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16. The proceeding took seven weeks, with dozens of witnesses testifying during the trial. The 50-year-old mother was ultimately convicted on two counts of murder, three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, and one count of grand theft.

Chad Daybell, Vallow’s fifth husband, has also been charged with the deaths of the children. Chad has pleaded not guilty and is due to go on trial next year.

Joshua and Tylee disappeared in 2019.

Chad’s then-wife Tammy Daybell was reported dead on October 19. He later married Lori Vallow two weeks later. J.J.’s and Tylee’s remains were found on Chad’s Idaho property in June 2020.

During the trial, attorney Lindsay Blake said that both Tammy and Joshua died from asphyxiation. Several witnesses related to the family took to the stand. One of them was Colby Ryan, Lori’s surviving son. He claimed that after Lori “met Chad Daybell, she changed.”

After the guilty verdict, Joshua’s grandfather, Larry Woodcock, made a statement outside of the courthouse.

“I want to thank 18 jurors; I cannot thank them enough. I want to personally thank and I want to personally hug every one of those jurors. What they went through and what they saw is mind-boggling. I hope nobody ever has to go through this. I hope no one has to hear the details of what happened to J.J., Tylee, and Tammy [Daybell],” Woodcock said.
