Leah Messer-Calvert, 'Teen Mom 2' Star, Reveals Daughter Aliannah Suffers From Muscular Dystrophy
Leah Messer-Calvert, one of the stars of Teen Mom 2, revealed that one of her daughters has been diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, an incurable muscle disease.
4-Year-Old Aliannah Diagnosed With Muscular Dystrophy
Leah was first featured on 16 & Pregnant, on which she gave birth to twin girls, Aliannah and Aleeah, now four. When the girls were babies, Leah and her then boyfriend, Corey Simms, noticed that Aliannah was developing more slowly than her sister, and had a series of tests done, all inconclusive. While focusing on helping Aliannah, Leah and Corey got married and then divorced. Through Aliannah’s parents did not part on good terms, they have since come together to support their daughter.
“Ali’s condition has brought us all extremely close together. We have to stay strong for Ali, and things are going good,” Leah said in an interview with In Touch Weekly.

Leah Messer-Calvert Opens Up About Daughter's Condition
Leah, now remarried to Jeremy Calvert and mother to another baby daughter, Adalynn Faith Calvert, opened up in her first interview since Ali’s diagnosis and revealed her plans to move into a handicap friendly home.
“The disorder affects her respiratory system and progresses the older she gets. The bigger she gets and the more weight she gains, the harder it’ll be for her muscles to carry the weight,” Leah revealed.
Ali is currently walking, but she will eventually need a wheelchair, making Leah’s newly purchased home impractical.
Ali’s diagnosis will be featured on the newest season of Teen Mom 2, as her health struggles have always been a part of the reality show. At the end of Season 4 last year, the cameras followed as Ali was brought in for a muscular biopsy.

Though the diagnosis is frightening, Leah says she is glad that they finally have answers and insists that her family is ready to care for Ali and whatever special needs she may have in the future.
“We were scared because we didn’t know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers. We never gave up, and we never will. We’ll do everything we can to make sure Ali has the life that she needs,” Leah said.
Teen Mom 2 also follows the lives of young mothers Janelle Evans, Chelsea Houska and Kailyn Lowry-Marroquin. New episodes air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on MTV.
