La La Anthony Explains Why She Opposes Pre-Nups [Video Exclusive]

Carmelo Anthony is separating from his wife La La Anthony after nearly seven years of marriage following speculation of the Knicks star allegedly cheating on his bride with a New York stripper and getting the dancer pregnant.

La La famously explained in her book The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex and Happiness, and in an exclusive discussion with uInterview in 2014, that she does not believe in pre-nuptial agreements, although this decision — or lack thereof — may now return to haunt the basketball player.

“You know, I just don’t want to look at marriage as a business agreement,” she told uInterview. “Now, in some situations I do understand where you may have to do that. So, I’m kinda on the fence on that, but you don’t want to go into a marriage just as a business relationship.”

“You want to go into a marriage because it’s true love and this is a person you see yourself spending the rest of your life with,” she added. “I’m on the fence about it; it can go either way, but definitely you still want to make sure at the core of it all you’re going into the marriage for the right reasons.”

Carmelo Anthony is one of the highest-paid stars in the NBA. Forbes listed him as the fifth-highest-paid player in the league in 2015, when he received $30.5 million in total earnings and a $22.5 million salary.

The Knicks veteran has earned a total of $201.1 million over his career, according to figures compiled by Spotrac.com. Carmelo is under contract for two more seasons at $26.2 million in 2017-18 and $27.9 million in 2018-19. He also earned $8 million in endorsements in 2015 from the likes of Nike, Jordan Brand, Foot Locker, IWC, Steiner Sports, Nickelodeon and others, according to Forbes.

Add to this the fact that Carmelo’s future with the Knicks remains unknown, as team president Phil Jackson said in a news conference on Friday, and the forward’s life must be very complicated right now. A divorce from La La will surely prove to be long, grueling and costly, should the couple choose to officially file one.

La La has reportedly moved out already from the home she shares on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with Carmelo and their 10-year-old son.

New York is an equitable division state. What this essentially means, according to FindLaw.com, is that “each spouse owns the income he or she earns during the marriage, and also has the right to manage any property that’s in his or her name alone.”

According to some rumors, Carmelo could be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he would play alongside longtime friend LeBron James.

Will the Anthonys file for divorce? Will they reach some type of informal agreement regarding custody or other issues given their lack of a prenup? We will surely find out soon.
