Kim Kardashian Files For Divorce From Kanye West After 7 Troubled Years of Marriage

Reality star Kim Kardashian West filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court from her husband, rapper Kanye West after almost seven years of marriage, according to Kardashian West’s representative Christy Welder.

Kardashian West is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm.

Kardashian West and West were longtime friends before they started dating in 2012. They had their first child, the daughter North, in 2013 and West proposed later that year at the San Francisco Giants stadium. The couple got married in May 2014 at a Renaissance fortress in Florence, Italy.

The pair become an instant power couple, making history on the cover of Vogue in 2014 as the first interracial couple to be featured on the cover.

Kardashian West has been divorced two other times, the first in 2003 from music producer Damon Thomas and the second time in 2013 from NBA player Kris Humphries. High profile divorce attorney Laura Wasser completed Kardashian’s divorce from Humphries and again filed Kardashian West’s divorce from West on Friday.

The pair’s split comes after months of public drama surrounding their relationship. The beginning of the end started last summer when West decided to run for president. During this time, West publicly shared details about his marriage and family.

At a campaign rally in South Carolina, West went on a tangent about how him and Kardashian West almost aborted their first child. Kardashian West was reportedly “furious” at West for sharing those personal details.

Shortly after that, West went on a Twitter rant rant claiming the Kardashian West and his mother-in-law, Kris Jenner, tried to “lock him up.” He also claimed he had been trying to divorce his wife since she met with rapper Meek Mill at a hotel.

Kardashian responded to all of this by posting on Instagram and asking for compassion and understanding towards her husband, who suffers from bipolar disorder.

“I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions. He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressures of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder,” she wrote on her Instagram story at the time. “We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most. I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this.”

The couple reunited after that in Wyoming, and shortly after that they went to the Dominican Republic with their kids.

After that, the pair seemed to be making things work, even as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. West contracted COVID-19 in March, at the start of the pandemic. In the fall of 2020, West posted another series of troubling tweets, but things seemed fine after he gifted his wife a hologram of her late father, Robert Kardashian, for her 40th birthday.
