Kevin Hart lives by an ethos of active positivity, which has driven him to worldwide success. But the financial windfall that has accompanied that success (and poor decision-making) has left him vulnerable to a lot of negative energy. Such was the case when Jonathan Todd Jackson (who goes by “Action Jackson”), a former friend of Hart’s, recorded a video of the Ride Along star with a woman in Las Vegas and then attempted to extort him for an undisclosed sum of money last August.

Now Jackson has been formally charged with attempted extortion and extortion by threatening letter. You can read the formal announcement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office here.

In a tweet yesterday that appeared to reference the charges, Hart noted that he was “at a lost [sic] for words and simply in complete disbelief”:
The actor/comedian was vulnerable to extortion because he had been cheating on his wife, Eniko Parrish. He chose to get out ahead of the story, apologizing to Parrish and their kids via an Instagram video last September, where he noted “I made a bad error in judgment and put myself in an environment where only bad things can happen, and they did.”
