Kelly Clarkson asked a judge to declare her legally divorced from Brandon Blackstock.

Clarkson’s attorney filed documents at the Los Angeles court on July 1. She requested a judge to declare their divorce final and plan to leave other arrangements such as spousal and child support for the future.

In a declaration to the court, the singer said she believes they “both deserve the opportunity to build a new life.”

Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020 after being married to Blackstock for seven years.

In November, a Los Angeles County judge allowed Clarkson to have primary physical custody of their two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander.

Blackstock, Clarkson’s former manager, is looking to be paid $436,0000 in monthly spousal and child support. If he is granted this request, he would receive over $5 million per year.

Clarkson has accused Blackstock’s company of fraud.

In February, Clarkson told Entertainment Tonight that she has been using music as a coping mechanism throughout the split.

“I have written like 60 songs,” she revealed. “It is an insane amount of getting it out.”

“I think that’s a blessing in itself,” she continued. “Anytime you go through some life, it’s such an awesome thing to have that outlet, regardless of whether people hear it or not.”

Clarkson later said that she doesn’t understand how a person could survive grieving any loss without some sort of escape or coping mechanism.

“I don’t know how anybody, I’ll just be real with you, goes through grief like divorce, any kind of grief, any kind of loss, without having an outlet.”
