It seems that every big star grows a beard after leaving the spotlight. Jon Stewart grew one after leaving The Daily ShowDavid Letterman grew one after leaving The Tonight Show, and now Jim Carrey has grown one too, after last appearing in the film True Crimes in 2016. Carey went on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night where the beard was discussed at length.

Carrey entered onto the stage milking in the applause as much as he could – he stood for nearly a full minute after the entrance music stopped playing in an attempt to “see what would happen if they stayed until they got tired.”

After mentioning that he felt as though he was truly experiencing what it means to be “Jim Carrey”, the host and the actor began to discuss the beard.

“Everywhere I go, people talk about the beard, they go, “What are you doing? Why are you growing a beard? It’s like they can’t really think about anything else,” Carrey said. “There is just something different about me and it’s that damn beard. Everywhere I show up that’s the story. It’s a bigger star than me at this point,” Carrey joked. “It has its own Twitter. Thank god it likes me.”

While Carrey is baffled by the fascination over his beard he said that he is more fascinated with the questions that people ask.

“I always say, the question is not, “Why are you growing a beard?” The question is, “Why am I growing a beard and still shaving my balls?” the comedian joked, making Kimmel giggle.

Carrey was on Kimmel Live to discuss the new show, I’m Dying Up Here, which he writes and executive produces. The show will air on Showtime on June 4.
