Jason Spencer, Republican State Representative of Georgia, appeared on an episode of Sacha Baron Cohen‘s Who Is America? that aired on Sunday, July 22, 2018. In this segment, Spencer shouted the N-word several times, enforced offensive Chinese stereotypes, flashed his rear end and stabbed a dummy wearing a burka in the groin. Baron Cohen posed as former Israeli anti-terrorism expert and convinced Spencer to participate in a “training video” to teach elected officials how to protect themselves from terrorist attacks.

The humiliating montage opened with clips from various news outlets reporting on Spencer’s past racially motivated statements and law proposals. Last summer, Spencer threatened former Democratic State Representative LaDawn Jones when she called for the removal of Confederate statues in Georgia on Facebook. The posts have since been deleted. He warned his Black colleague that she might “go missing” and that she would be met with “something a lot more definitive” than tiki torches, referencing the Neo-Nazi rally that took place in Charlottesville that same summer.

On Who Is America?, Baron Cohen asked Spencer about the law he tried to introduce in November of 2016 that would ban Muslim women from covering their faces in public. Spencer stated that Muslims are abusing the First Amendment by wearing veils. Baron Cohen then “instructs” Spencer to pose as a Chinese tourist and use a selfie stick to look up a burka to see if a Muslim woman is really a terrorist carrying a weapon. Spencer put on an accent and used phrases such as “Hong Kong,” “red dragon,” “chopsticks” and other such racially targeted words as his “disguise.”

Baron Cohen then taught Spencer how to attract attention in the event of a kidnap. He tells Spencer to shout the “forbidden” “N-word” to passersby. Spencer screamed “n—-r” multiple times before Baron Cohen stopped him, called the slur “disgusting” and said the word he meant was “noony.” Next, Baron Cohen told Spencer that “terrorists are scared of being seen as homo” and told him he should bare his butt to terrorists to ward them off. Spencer complied.

In a post credits clip titled “A Message To Terrorists From Rep. Jason Spencer,” the GOP lawmaker brandished a knife at the camera threatening to castrate terrorists, called them “sand n—-rs”, and stabbed a dummy wearing a burka in the groin. “How are you going to rape women and children without a d–k,” Spencer screamed.

Spencer is in his fourth term as State Representative and was pursuing a fifth when he was defeated by political newcomer Steven Sainz in the May primary election. Several Republican leaders have called for Spencer to resign from office, including Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. Spencer apologized for his actions and stated that “Sacha Baron Cohen and his associates took advantage of my paralyzing fear that my family would be attacked.” He references death threats that he and his wife received in 2017 in response to his “anti-masking” bill. Spencer, however, refused to resign as he is already ending his term in five months.
