Cannes Jewel Heist: $53 Million Worth Of Jewels Stolen
An armed robber stole $53 million worth of jewels from a running jewelry exhibition in Cannes, France, on Sunday.
The heist occurred at the Carlton Hotel in the French resort city, according to the deputy prosecutor for organized crime in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur Philippe Vique. When the robber entered the event, his face covered by a hat and scarf, he threatened both the exhibitors and guests with a gun.
Jewels Stolen At Cannes Film Festival, Valued At Over $1 Million
Though security guards were present at the exhibit, they were not armed, reported CNN. No one was injured in the robbery. The exhibit, set up by Leviev Extraordinary Diamonds, was meant to continue on through to the end of August.
This most recent thieft is the third to hit Cannes since May. During the Cannes Film Festival, over $1 million worth of jewels was taken from a hotel room safe. Later on during the festival, a necklace valued at $2.6 million was stolen from a hotel party. Both jewel loots had been in the possession of festival sponsor and Swiss firm Chopard.
