Jimmie Walker, who co-starred with Bill Cosby in 1975’s Let’s Do It Again, said he wasn’t surprised by all the allegations made against Cosby as Cosby’s lawyer goes on the offensive in the media.
Walker, a comedian best known for his role in Good Times, worked with Cosby and he recently revealed that he thought everybody knew about Cosby’s frequent – if not constant – extramarital dalliances. Walker did not condemn Cosby, instead noting that he loved Cosby despite the infidelity he witnessed, but he did admit that he was shocked to find out that there were drugs involved.
“I love Bill Cosby… The thing that upsets me the most is that we’re never gonna see his work again… I actually thought that everybody knew about all these women. The thing that shocks me the most is the drugging,” he told TMZ this week.
Cosby admitted to obtaining seven prescriptions of Quaaludes in the ‘70s with the specific purpose of giving the sedatives to women to have sex with them in a recently leaked 2005 deposition. The entire deposition was leaked Saturday, exposing Cosby’s flippant attitude towards accusations of sexual assault and leaving public opinion of the comedian at an all time low.
In response to the deposition leak, Cosby’s new lawyer, Monique Pressley, has embarked on a media offensive, appearing on various talk shows and news programs to defend Cosby. In an interview with CNN, Pressley gave a different interpretation of the deposition, pointing out that Quaaludes used to be considered a “party drug” and that Cosby never admitted to giving drugs to a woman without her consent.
“It’s not really a revelation that Quaaludes were used in the ‘70s.… Mr. Cosby admitted in his deposition to offering one person, who he was in a relationship with, Quaaludes during that time period,” Pressley claimed.
“There has been a good deal of confusion, and perhaps a better word would be misrepresentation, regarding the deposition testimony which has been filtered out in excerpt form. There is no criminal conduct here. Nothing within the deposition moves the ball forward for those people accusing Mr. Cosby of criminal activity,” Pressley told The New York Times.
Pressley hasn’t just been defending Cosby on television, she has also filed legal papers on his behalf. Andrea Constand, the woman who sued Cosby in 2005 and claimed he drugged and raped her, recently filed legal papers requesting that the deposition be released in its entirety (legally, the entire deposition has not been released, but it was leaked online). On Tuesday, Pressley filed papers requesting that the court keep those documents sealed. Furthermore, Pressley and Cosby attempted to keep Cosby from having to give another deposition in a separate case against him in California.
The California Supreme Court denied Pressley’s request to review a lawsuit filed by Gloria Allred on behalf of Judy Huth, a woman who claims she was sexually assaulted by Cosby in 1974 when she was 15-years-old. After the court’s ruling, Cosby will be forced to give a deposition, and Allred has reportedly declared her intention to question Cosby on all the women who have publicly accused him of rape and sexual assault. Allred has also announced her intention to conduct the deposition within the next month.
