At last night’s 2023 BAFTA Film Awards in London, Kerry Condon and Carey Mulligan were competing against one another in the Best Supporting Actress category. Condon was nominated for her role as Siobhán Súilleabháin in The Banshees of Inisherin while Mulligan was honored for her performance in the film She Said as American journalist Megan Twohey.
In a re-run of the La La Land–Moonlight mix-up, Mulligan’s name was accidentally called instead of the actual winner, Condon.

The mistake occurred as CODA actor Troy Kotsur, who won Best Supporting Actor at last year’s awards ceremony, named the nominees with a sign language interpreter.
The interpreter then read out Mulligan’s name, but after a couple of seconds, he corrected himself and announced Condon as the winner.
Kotsur and the interpreter rectified the mistake before Mulligan got out of her seat and started giving her acceptance speech.
During the confusion, Condon’s name was displayed on the screen as the winner, so co-star Colin Farrell encouraged her to go up on stage to accept the award.
As the first two-thirds of the show was aired on BBC One on a delay, the incident was edited out of the actual broadcast.
Condon, who was also nominated for an Oscar for her role, won the BAFTA over Angela Bassett for Blank Panther: Wakanda Forever, Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything, Everywhere All at Once and Hong Chau for The Whale.
She will be up against them again, in addition to EEAAO‘s Stephanie Hsu, next month at the 95th Academy Awards.
