Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis was hospitalized Saturday night with stomach flu symptoms.
Kiedis, 53, was taken to a Los Angeles hospital Saturday just hours before the Red Hot Chili Peppers were slated to perform their headlining show at KROQ’s annual Weenie Roast, reported Billboard. Bassist Flea took to the stage at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater to inform the crowd that the show would not go on as planned due to Kiedis’ health. Flea offered an apology and admitted that the band was “devastated.”
“We are devastated about it,” said Flea. “We live to rock, we live to f—ing kick deep into the depths of our hearts and rock, but unfortunately there’s a medical thing that happened and we need to deal with it.”
KROQ confirmed the news on Twitter, writing, “Unfortunately due to illness the @ChiliPeppers were forced to cancel their set tonight at #WeenieRoast.”
Drummer Chad Smith wrote, “NO one’s more disappointed than us that we couldn’t perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony.”
Taking over for Red Hot Chili Peppers in closing out the day of performances at the Weenie Roast was Weezer. Blink-182, Panic! at the Disco, Empire of the Sun, Garbage, Lumineers, Fitz and the Tantrums and Miike Snow had performed throughout the day.
