“Affluenza” teen Ethan Couch, 20, has been released from jail after serving almost two years for killing four people.
He was released before his 21st birthday on April 11, according to the sheriff’s office he will remain under strict probation supervision.
Couch had originally avoided jail time because a psychologist testified on his behalf claimed the spoiled life his parents Fred Couch and Tonya Couch gave him lead to his irresponsible behavior. The psychologist coined the term “affluenza,” which has sparked controversy around the country.
Coach received 10 years probation but was allegedly seen violating his probation in a video of people playing beer pong. His probation had a ban on alcohol and driving, even though no action was taken against him when the video went viral and then he and his mother fled to Mexico. The pair were caught and his mother was charged with felony for hindering the apprehension of a felon. Since he violated his probation, Ethan was sentenced to serve two years in jail.
After his release on Monday, it’s unclear where Couch will go. His mother is still serving jail time for violating her bond after she was convicted for helping him flee to Mexico.
His lawyers Scott Brown and Reagan Wynn said in a statement, “Ethan does not wish to draw attention to himself and requests privacy so he may focus on successfully completing his community supervision and going forward as a law-abiding citizen.”
