Anthony Bourdain, was found dead in his hotel room on Friday. Christian de Rocquigny, the prosecutor of Colmar in France’s Alsace region, confirmed Bourdain had hanged himself in the bathroom of his room.

Anthony Bourdain Cause Of Death

Bourdain used the belt of his hotel bathrobe to commit suicide. He was staying at Le Chambard, a five-star hotel.

Bourdain and his close friend who discovered him unresponsive, Eric Ripert, ate at the hotel’s bistro The Winstub nearly every night for dinner. However, Bourdain didn’t go on Thursday night.

The waiter, Maxime Voinson, told The New York Times, “Maybe he went out and ate somewhere else, we said. But we didn’t think much of it.”

However, suspicion grew when the chef didn’t meet for breakfast with Ripert at The Winstub, which the two regularly did together.

“His friend was waiting at breakfast,” Voinson said. “And waiting and waiting.”

Eventually, a hotel receptionist opened Bourdain’s door after he didn’t answer his cell phone.

De Rocquigny said there was no indication of foul play, adding that the suicide seemed to be an “impulsive act.”

“There is no element that makes us suspect that someone came into the room at any moment,” De Rocquigny said.

Blood has been drawn from Bourdain’s body, as well as a urine sample, to screen for drugs or other toxins that may have contributed to his death.

“This is solely to give the family more information about the motivations and the cause of death,” the prosecutor said.
