Chris McKay, known for directing Warner Bros.’s critically acclaimed Lego Batman Movie, is currently in negotiations to direct an adaption of Dungeons & Dragons for Paramount Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McKay is currently in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to direct a film based on the longstanding tabletop game. July 23, 2021 is the current planned release day for the movie. Michael Gillio will pen the script, and AllSpark Pictures will produce.

Dungeons & Dragons launched back in 1974, and an unsuccessful film adaption of it was released in 2000 by New Line Cinema. After a legal battle over ownership of Dungeons & Dragons‘ film rights that Warner Bros. won, Paramount has since claimed the rights to Hasbro’s flagship fantasy game.

McKay started animating and directing back in the Aughts, working on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken television show before getting to loan his talents to The Lego Movie in 2014. McKay is currently attached to Warner Bros.’s upcoming Nightwing film, which is a part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe franchise.
