Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph Reunite At ‘Sisters’ Premiere
Saturday Night Live alums Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph hit the red carpet for their latest film collaboration, Sisters, in New York City Tuesday night.
‘Sisters’ Premiere
In the movie, written by longtime SNL writer Paula Pells, Fey and Poehler play sisters Kate and Maura Ellis, while Rudolph plays Maura’s teenage nemesis Brinda. Sisters shows the two wildly different siblings throw one last bash at their parents’ (James Brolin, Dianne Wiest) home before they sell it.
Not only are Fey and Poehler starring in the film, they also came on board as hands-on producers.
“When we choose projects, we do have our own internal Bechdel test,” Fey said in a recent interview with The New York Times about Sisters. “These are women who are in conflict, but they’re not in competition. And it is about shaking off roles that they were given early in life that they now grew out of. Whether overtly in the story or not, we definitely are always looking at things that feel true to us.”
Unlike in Baby Mama, the 2008 featured that the duo starred in together, it’s Poehler who is playing the more straight-laced character of the two in Sisters. While Fey’s Kate is an out-going hairstylist, Poehler’s Maura is a reserved nurse. During the night of the party, Fey hints that a switch flips in Maura.
“I was, like, we want to see Amy go crazy over the night of the party,” Fey said. “It’s going to be so fun to watch her take that pendulum swing. It actually is the part that requires a better actor and a better comedian. And, Amy loves sex scenes.”
“I do. I insist on them,” Poehler quipped.
As for Rudolph, when she was offered the part by her former SNL costars, she was more than eager to play the part they had set aside for her.
“Tina texted me and said, ‘Would you please come be in our movie? You get to be a real jerk named Brinda-with-an-I,'” Rudolph recalled, “And I was like, I’m there.”
Sisters hits theaters Dec. 18.
