Modern Family, Kate Winslet Take Top Honors At Primetime Emmy Awards

Host Jane Lynch summed up the evening when she said, "Welcome back to the Modern Family Awards." The ABC comedy was victorious in five major categories, including Outstanding Comedy Series, at Sunday’s 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The quirky family comedy also held the most nominations and was the favorite in most of its categories. Mad Men, the '60s era advertising executive drama, won Outstanding Drama Series for the fourth year in a row. Every season it has been on the air, Mad Men has was won the award. However, the top honor was the only award to go to the AMC drama, as all the other drama awards went to a diverse list including DirecTV / NBC's Friday Night Lights, HBO's Game of Thrones and CBS's The Good Wife.

In the made-for-television movie / mini-series category, HBO's depression-era housewife drama Mildred Pierce did not do as well as expected, though it did garner trophies for actors Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce. Instead, there was a near sweep for the Masterpiece Theater production of Downton Abbey. In the Variety, Music or Comedy Series category, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart took top honors yet again, with presenter Scott Caan quipping before announcing the nominees, "Let's see who The Daily Show will beat this year."
