Oscar Pistorius Trial Update: Athlete Vomits In Court As Reeva Steenkamp Autopsy Details Are Given
Oscar Pistorius vomited in court on Monday in South Africa as a pathologist detailed the findings of the autopsy performed on his late girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Oscar Pistorius Trial Update
Charged with the premeditated murder of Steenkamp, who he claims to have mistaken for an intruder, Pistorius appeared physically distressed to hear the analysis of the shots he took that ended her life. Following a string of witnesses, pathologist Gert Saayman was the trial’s first expert, giving facts of the case for Judge Thokozile Masipa.
According to Saayman, Steenkamp suffered three bullet wounds – to the arm, to the hip and to the chest. He explained that any one of the three gunshots could have potentially caused unconsciousness or death upon impact, meaning that it’s possible that Steenkamp didn’t scream after she was hit. Saayman also revealed that the bullets were Black Talon bullets, which expand to create maximum damage, reported ABC News. Steenkamp’s wounds also included splinters and shrapnel from the bullets passing through the bathroom door.
Pistorius Vomits In Court
Throughout Saayman’s testimony, Pistorius alternated between sobs and throwing up into a bucket. Twice, Judge Masipa was forced to halt the proceedings to check on the defendant to make sure that he was able to understand what was being said for the sake of the legal process – not out of concern, according to CNN’s Robyn Curnow.
Pistorius also appeared to break down days ago when a witness, his neighbor Johan Stipp, testified about what he saw when he rushed over to the Olympian’s South Pretoria residence after hearing the commotion. Stipp said when he arrived, he saw Steenkamp’s brain matter and blood from her injuries as she lied on the floor. "I remember the first thing [Pistorius] said when I got there was, 'I shot her, I thought she was a burglar and I shot her,'" Stipp added.
Pistorius, if convicted of premeditated murder by Judge Masipa, will face a minimum of 25 years behind bars and a maximum of life in prison.
