Oscar Pistorius Heads Back To The Track For First Time Since Murder Of Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius recently returned to running on the track with his carbon blades, as the South African Olympian was released on bail after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius was caught on camera jogging on the track of a South African university on March 24. Lisa Smith, a teenage hockey player, took the grainy image of Pistorius through the bars of the Pretoria stadium that she was arriving at with her hockey team, according to South Africa's The Witness.

“The kids were very excited,” said team coach Charmaine Koekemoer. “They were shouting ‘There’s Oscar’!”

It’s the first time the gold medal winner has been spotted training since he was charged with Steenkamp’s murder. After last week saw Pistorius’ bail conditions eased up to allow the Blade Runner to travel from South Africa to compete, it’s been speculated that Pistorius’ time on the track was more than just the accused murderer clearing his head.

However, Pistorius’ agent, Peet van Zyl, has refuted claims that his client has imminent plans to begin racing competitively, telling the Daily MIrror, “It was only a jog around the track.” Pistorius’ uncle, Arnold Pistorius, also denied that he was training to the newspaper.

"Oscar is not back on any official training program. This may change in future, but this will be a decision taken by Oscar, and Oscar alone,” he said to the Mirror. “At this point Oscar is still in an extremely traumatized state and has made it clear to all of us that he is not able or willing to even contemplate this issue at this stage. Against this backdrop, we can confirm that we did have a meeting with Oscar yesterday where various family members and his trainer were present.

"We all encouraged him to get back onto the track to help stabilize him emotionally,” Pistorius’ Uncle added. “Oscar has been out running on a number of isolated occasions in the days following the relaxation of his bail conditions, but each time has been very difficult and he has struggled immensely with the decision to even leave the house. As a family, however, we encourage him to start exercising as we believe it is a vital step in helping him deal with the trauma."

Pistorius, who claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder on Valentine’s Day, denies having intentionally murdered the late model. He is due back in court on June 4.
